During my first visit to Rwanda I was really impressed by the nature of the country and their lovely people. Everybody, from babies to toddlers, from girls to boys, from women to man - everybody is always smiling. Instead of calling the country "the country of the 1000 hills" people could also call it "the country of the 1000 smiles".
My visit to the Nyamirambo Women's Center had deeply moved me - I was touched by the women of the Center, survivors of the genocide, women who have adopted orphans of the genocide. living in extreme poverty. They opened my eyes, and showed me that there can be still dreams and laughter, even when there seems to be no hope left. NWC has created a space for dreams; it has been able to create hope and give a sense of a tomorrow to many women in the community. I feel humbled and honored to bring "my" little piece to the table and hopefully open a window for many with view to the future. With our help, the center will be able to expand its activites, be financially more independent and become a cultural center in Kigali.
In September 2013, NWC recruited my sister in law Monica TABET-GUGOLZ, an international development expert from Switzerland, who is currently living in Kigali, Rwanda, with her husband and family of 3 children. Monica has contributed and helped NWC develop their own Strategic Plan for 2014 - 2018, internal Rules and Regulations and obtained legal statutes according to the new Rwandan law for non-profit organzations. The goal is to try to bring long term and sustainable planning into the equation. Moreover, a local financial expert had been recruited to assist NWC in creating a professional and transparent financial system planning. Monica will continue to act as a consultant and advisor to the Center on a volunteer basis for the foreseeable future. She will also be managing the distribution of funds in a sustainable manner.
Everything our association is doing is on a volonteer basis which means that every Swiss Franc will be donated to the Center.
I look forward to sharing with you more insights and stories, and hopefully welcome you as a companion to this amazing journey!
